Last night we had Grandpa and Grandma Brown over for dinner to celebrate Veteran's Day! Grandpa told some great stories about being a "radio" technician in the Navy during the war. I put radio in quotes because they called Grandpa that because they did not want to give away to the Japanese that the Americans had better technology then them, so "radio" sounded like we didn't have great technology...but...it sounds like Grandpa worked with some pretty high tech machines. He actually was working on Radar, not radios. One machine he worked with, an IFF (Indicator Friend or Foe) was able to self destruct. If intruders got to it, it would make it self so hot the computer inside would melt. A month after the war ended, Grandpa had to spend nearly a month to get from Guam. He traveled on a ship by Hawaii, down the West Coast, through the Panama Cannal and up the East Coast to New York. Then, they took a train from New York to San Fransisco where he was discharged. Grandpa felt his time spent in the Navy was an adventure, and from the stories he told it sounded like he had a good time. He saw, Treasure Island, Hawaii, New York, Chicago, Guam and Del Monte. In Del Monte, Grandpa and the other Radio technicians were treated like royalty! They never had to wait in mess lines and were served their food by women. In one of the Kwanzit Huts they stayed in, the bunks were stacked six high! And, Grandpa was lucky enough to sleep on the sixth bunk. Next time you sleep on the top of the army bunks at the cabin, don't complain how high it is. I am greatful for Grandpa and all of the other veterans who served our country so well. Love you Grandpa!
